Danny Dyer's Story

Well, teaching Danny Dyer, what can I say?

Danny was a dream to teach, he came to learn with us because with a busy schedule like his, he needed to pass his test as quickly as possible with the minimum amount of fuss, so he chose an intensive driving course.

I am positive that the key to his success both in his career and in passing his test at the first attempt, was his desire to “get it right” and do whatever it takes to make things right.

Right from the beginning Danny said that I was to forget who he was and just not let him get away with anything, (which is what I would do for anyone).
The fun and games started the very first time we stopped for a tea break. On the way back to the car, he was stopped by a woman who had recognised him and she literally begged him for his autograph, which he was more than pleased to give her.

This was the first of so many occasions that he signed autographs and had his picture taken with everyone from kids to pensioners.

During one of our lunch breaks, Danny had such a queue of people waiting for autographs his lunch got cold, but he never complained.

I asked him how he dealt with the relentless recognition and pressures that went with it. His reply was “without my fans I am nothing. They don’t pay my wages directly, but without them I wouldn’t be where I am today. Recognition is part of the job description”.

We even had a car pull alongside us in a traffic queue, the occupants asking for autographs. This was the only time he ever refused. (if he hadn’t, I would have.)

The only time Danny was worried about recognition was when he went for his test. He wanted to pass without the examiner knowing who he was. He wanted to pass on merit alone. He actually got his wish and the examiner didn’t recognise him.

Danny had to take a day off in the middle of his course to do a photo shoot in London. During that day, I read his book “Straight Up” and got an insight into the way he worked, I asked him to sign the book for me and his comments are in the picture.
